The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children

The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), known to participants and press as ‘Children of the 90s’ was established to unravel the genetic and environmental pathways that predispose parents and children to the development of illness and disorders. Set up in 1991 by Jean Golding, the project originally recruited some 14,000 expectant mothers. In 2001, it was awarded a grant of ?11 million by the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the University of Bristol.
