Strong African American Families (SAAF) is a family-centered program designed to prevent alcohol use and abuse among rural African American youth and to improve the parenting practices of the significant caregivers responsible for them. Targeting rural African Americans, aged between ten and 12 and their primary caregivers, it consists of seven consecutive weekly meetings when the young people and their caregivers eat, talk and watch program-oriented videos together. Early results indicate reduced initiation of alcohol use, slower increase in use over time and stronger community partnerships.
SAAF is a Blueprints Promising Program.
