PROGRESA

Also known as Opportunidades, PROGRESA is a conditional cash transfer program developed in Mexico. The focus is on school enrollment and attendance, with families receiving up to $62.50 a month if their children attend regularly. Children who fail at school lose eligibility.

PROGRESA has been the subject of several randomized experiments and shown to have positive effects on children’s outcomes. With over four million households in Mexico taking part, it is widely thought to be the catalyst for the uptake of similar programs across the developing and developed world
