Guiding Good Choices

Guiding Good Choices is a drug use prevention program that aims to provide parents with the knowledge and skills they need to guide their children through early adolescence. It seeks to strengthen and clarify family expectations for behavior, enhance the conditions that promote bonding within the family and teach skills that allow children to resist drug use.

Originally called Preparing for the Drug Free Years and based on the research of David Hawkins and colleagues in the University of Washington Social Development Research Group, the program was revised in 2003 to include more family activities and exercises.

It is recognized by the US National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP), a service of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
