Etic

Etic indicates an approach to psychopathology that uses standardized methods to assess people from different cultures.
Originally coined by Kenneth Pike in 1954, the term derives from the linguistic term phonetic. Phonetic refers to standard systems for representing the total repertoire of sounds used in all human languages. Thus scientists interested in psychopathology, use etic to describe the use of standardized assessment methods across different cultures. Etic approaches are different from, but not incompatible with, emic approaches.
