Emic inicates an approach to psychopathology that focuses on the meanings that particular characteristics have in a specific culture.
Originally coined by Kenneth Pike in 1954, the term emic derives from the linguistic term phonemic. Phonemic refers to the sounds meaningful for a specific language. Thus scientists interested in psychopathology use emic to describe the meaning that particular characteristics have in a specific culture. Emic approaches are different from, but not incompatible with, etic approaches.
