MAOA

MAOA refers to a set of enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of monoamines. MAOA is not expressed in all individuals. Groundbreaking studies by Caspi and colleagues found expression of MAOA to mediate the impact of child maltreatment on their health and development. These studies represent one of the first empirical representations of the Gene Environment or GxE interactions. MAOA belongs to protein family of flavin and is found in neurons, outside the central nervous system as well as in the liver, gastrointestinal tract and placenta.
