The Good Behavior Game is a classroom management strategy for decreasing aggressive/disruptive behavior. It was developed at the University of Kansas and first described and reported in 1969 in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis.
Randomized controlled trials have since shown reductions in students’ subsequent substance abuse, and behavioral and mental health disorders.
For the game, the teacher divides her class into three teams, each with an equal proportion of boys and girls, and aggressive versus well-behaved children. The teacher then describes good student behaviors, and disruptive behaviors and introduces a routine of checks and rewards – eg. at the end of each game period, then at the end of the week, acknowledging good behavior with stickers and gold stars.
