Community Mothers targets first-time mothers and their infants up to one year of age who live in disadvantaged areas. Existing mothers in these communities are trained to empower new parents about health care, nutrition and child development. Since its launch in Dublin, Ireland in 1988, experimental evaluations have shown better parenting skills, improvements in both mothers’ and children’s diet, and a higher take-up of immunisation. Variations of the model have been delivered in the Netherlands and Western Australia.
