Schools and Families Educating Children is a family-centered intervention targeting children in deprived inner-city areas, developed by Patrick Tolan and his team at the Institute for Juvenile Research at the University of Chicago. The program aims to improve grades at school, and reduce the risk of drug abuse and anti-social behavior.
Five- and six-year-old participants attend 20 weeks of tutoring. At the same time, their parents attend groups where they learn about how to manage their children’s transition into school. The developers have also produced a booster intervention which is delivered when children reach the ages of nine or ten.
